Inquisitors – Friends or Foes?

(Editor: This is the first article in a multi-part investigation. Names have been changed to protect our sources.)

Inquisitors – the mage police. We see them around, we trust them but.. should we?

Inquisitors trace their lineage back to Enchanters. Enchanters, in the opinion of many I interviewed, are the wild cards of heavy magic users. In a future feature we’ll delve in to this statement but, for the sake of brevity, Enchanters are about manipulation of minds and have a mixed history of that use.

The Inquisitors that were granted approval for interview claim they, as a whole, have sworn off mind manipulation for anything other than defence and investigation. They distance themselves as much as possible from their Enchanter roots, and point to many investigations against rogue Enchanters – those that refused to register, or registered but in dark corners practice the more extreme side of control. They point to their positioning within Sageside, overlooking the majority of the mage guilds, the best vantage point to monitor daily activities.

To a person one thing is for sure, they didn’t distance themselves from the charismatic side of Enchanters.

Inquisitors in Night Harbor are tasked with the regulation and monitoring of good magic practices. From the healing practices of Clerics to the art of Necromancy, all must have public safety, the best interests of the city, the preservation and advancements of the arts, and the sharing of knowledge.

To their credit, and the Steel Talon’s credit, Night Harbor is safe, or as safe as it can be for a large city. Abuse of magic is relatively low. All Guilds have their secrets, but the flow of information, the discoveries that better the lives of the average citizens, are openly shared.

Although leaders Jaffar Jhaym and Petra Gyle were unavailable for an interview, we were assigned a chaperone who took us on a guided tour of their Spire, with a surprise at the end – an invite to a trial that was a result of an investigation.
